I did not set out to take a long hiatus from the podcast, or the blog for that matter. It just sort of happened. The way you sort of forget to call your parents, and life gets busy, and then one day you realize it’s been three months since you talked. And it’s June.
I’m glad I managed to pop in before the end of the month, as June is a good month for me, typically. I was born in June, and while I don’t really care what goes on during the twenty nine utterly insignificant days that aren’t my birthday, on the one day that matters, I make it count.
This year was noteworthy for a number of reasons. I have never before experienced the birthday song, played just for me, by Felix (or anyone for that matter) on the accordion, while sipping my morning tea. It was delightful having a friend here to celebrate, and celebrate we did, with wine and song, and cards and presents and phone calls all day long. Even my kids remembered. It was a good day.
My birthday also happened to coincide this year with the end of two very large projects. This is one. Go look. Then come back. It took a full month to build that baby and, again, the road I traveled to get there is not the one I thought I was on at the beginning of the process. I didn’t set out to build a whole website. Honestly. I was just going to tweak this one a little, add a shopping cart, and be done. A week, I thought, at most. The trouble with me and web design is that I don’t even know what I don’t know. Ya know? It took a few weeks to learn some of what I didn’t know, and after that, building a website specifically for the purpose was the obvious solution.
The other enormous project put to bed this month has been six months in the making. Well, six years. And six months. This one right here. Go look. I’ll wait for you. This joint project with sound artist Felicity Ford (aka my friend, Felix) also evolved over many months into something I couldn’t have envisioned way back at the start. A Knitter’s Manifesto is a collection of some of the essays I’ve written for Cast On through the years, as well as some new work. I stepped up to the microphone at a real, live, honest-to-goodness, state-of-the-art, professional recording studio (where I had a bad, bad case of microphone envy) and you better believe the audio is clean. Felix collected the ambient sounds of my little corner of Wales during her February visit, and then the week of my birthday she came to visit again, to mix the final cd master, and create some of the the Artist’s Edition ephemera, and celebrate.
Though there is, naturally, lots more to share and tell, I didn’t actually set out to write a blog post tonight (which seems to be shaping up nicely as a theme through this post) and I’m feeling the lateness of the hour. It’s actually the middle of the night, and I’ve finished my tea and there will be no more, as I’ve used the last of the milk. So I’m going to bed. I know we’re due a good long catch up, and I’ll fill in all the details in a podcast early next week.
So very glad to hear from you again. I’ll go right now to look at your projects…ooo…starting a pot of tea sounds perfect too.
LOVE THAT YOU’RE BACK, for however briefly
Holy websites batman!! Can’t wait for those trips to Wales!
Welcome back. Saw your tweet and hopped right over to say hi! Nice website (s).
Hear you soon and a happy birth year to you.
It was an honour to play the accordion on your birthday.
woops… I sent the comment before I finished it!
Yes, it was much MUCH fun to play the accordion on your birthday, and it’s been wonderful working on A Knitter’s Manifesto. I particularly enjoyed gathering the sounds from your gorgeous corner of Wales.
Finally, I am in awe of your web FU and I have learned by proxy how very much more there is to building a website, than I originally thought…
You did a great job on the shop; it looks amazing. And I want to visit all the places in Welsh for Rainbow and record THE SOUNDS…
Darlingest Brenda,
Glad to hear all is well, that you are safe, happy, & playing out of the traffic.
I like the new shop, I love the fact that Felix played to you on yer birthday, but ~ have you heard the one about the African Mammal, the feathered friends, & the domesticated quadrupeds???
“Hippo, birdies, two ewes, hippo birdies, two ewes (c’mon! You know you want to sing it with me!)
May this be the best & happiest year yet for you & Tonya.
Much love,
Lady Annetta,

Great to hear from you at last. I was missing one of my favourite pod-casters…that would be you! Have a great year ahead now that you’ve turned another one on the calendar…And boy, those CDs look yummy!
What happened to thoughts of architecture education?
I’m glad you’re back. Don’t explain.
Immensely looking forward to listening to the Knitters’ Manifesto. Glad you had a lovely Felix-filled birthday – she really is an amazing source for joy and awesomeness.

Welcome Back!! xoxo.
AHHHHHHHH. I can’t wait!!!!!
Please, please, please get back to podcasting. I love to hear from you!
Hi there – I have gone ahead and ordered Welsh for Rainbow – wishing you great success with the new website and projects and hearing all the news on the next podcast….
Love the new site! It’s so crisp and yet colourful! I will have to save some pennies, and pick up the mixtape! Happy birthday, good to hear from you.
I have to admit that I missed your voice and needed a little inspiration so I downloaded the “Muses” series again, next I think will be the crafty scouts one, and hmmm…. “make do and mend” They always inspire me to get off my duff and get crafting! Thanks fo all you do, it doesn’t go un-noticed. Cheers.
I have been slow to discover podcasting but I am a total addict now. I really enjoy Cast-On. You have a terrific voice and your segments are great. I love hearing about where you live and all your knitting adventures. Hope you had a Happy Birthday! Thank you for podcasting!
Oh I have this terrible mix of longing and dread. I’m eager to hear the next episode, but fear it will contain an announcement of the demise of Cast On. Even so, I know I will have to stop whatever I’m doing and listen the moment it comes out. Here’s hoping it’s happy news.
I was just thinking how LONG it had been since there were any updates on your blog. I’m thrilled at the new direction you are going, and think it is the next step in what has been a great journey. I’ll be saving my pennies for the “mixtape” as well. And a trip to Wales, now this sounds interesting!
Happy Birthday, Brenda! Looking forward to hearing more about all your projects in the next podcast. I hope Tonia’s mom is doing better. <3
So nice to hear from you… I was starting to worry. Glad it is just busy ness, or I hope it is all busy ness. Looking forward to the podcast.
I just happened to check in here and I’m SO pleased to see this post, hear that you’re doing well, and learn that there may be a new podcast coming up soon. These new projects of yours are so exciting! Although I miss listening, I never feel bad when you take time off from the show because I know that you’re up to something equally amazing, and even if it isn’t being shared with me, it makes me glad just to know you’re out there doing such wonderful work. Thank you!
you my dear amaze me…i have missed your voice but im glad you have been keeping busy!
Brenda DAhling,
Please podcast soon! I have been savoring some of your old podcasts, waiting and wondering when the next would be out.
Just know that you are my favoritest podcaster ever, ever, ever!
I am jonesing here!
Thanks for all you do, have done, and will do!
(Not so patiently waiting)
Merry
Huzza! you’re back! I’m glad it was a happy birthday and that you’re well. Some of us listeners are terrible worriers you know. Looking forward to a proper poke through the shop when I get home tonight.
I’m so delighted that there’ll be a new podcast soon.
Happy Belated Birthday Brenda! I too am of the Gemini group and am amazed how many knitters are Gemini. I wonder if we did a poll how many others we would find? Just sayin’
I couldn’t be happier to hear that your podcast will be coming back. I’ve listened to each episode at least three times, and have loved every listen. I’ll be happy for the sound of your voice anew, though! And your Cast-On store is divine!! Congratulations on a fantastic project!!
