New puppy!

by Brenda on August 13, 2010

Name this dog. Please.

We’ve had him for three days, and can’t seem to agree on what to call him, though we’ve narrowed it down some. The choices are:

Henry (my favorite, Tonia’s least favorite)
Cooper (Tonia’s favorite, my least favorite)
Truman (the only name we can sort of agree on)

HenryTrumanCooper is smart, friendly, playful, and energetic. Oh boy, is he ever energetic. He enjoys (make that requires, if you want any sleep) long walks in the countryside, pouncing, and stealing yarn when you’re not looking.

Vote here, please.

Thank you.

He’s beautiful! Sorry, Tonia, but ‘Henry’ gets my vote. ‘HenryTrumanCooper’ reminds me of this chap: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Cooper.

Is he a Welsh Springer by any chance? They are lovely dogs! The breeder where we got our Irish Setter also bred Welsh Springers and when we visited our “puppy-to-be” the welcome we got from the Springers was very enthusiastic. How about something from the countryside as a name? Bracken, Rowan, Bramble – that sort of thing.

My policy has always been to name animals with names that I wouldn’t give to a child. It also prevents confusion when you are calling the dog and the neighbor’s kid answers you.

While I doubt there are a lot of Trumans or Coopers in your neck of the woods, I bet there are quite a few Henrys. Perhaps something like ‘Elvis’? I bet there isn’t a kid with that name in all of Wales.

Or pick something that isn’t a human name. Based on his energy, how about Rocket? (Rocky for short.)

I voted for Henry. He’s an adorable cavalier king charles puppy. If we ever get a second puppy we’re planning on calling it Roy Harper.

Looks like a Hooper or Trooper or Trenry to me. NOT a Henman or Cooman, though. This pet naming is tricky business!

I rather like ‘Henrytrumancooper’ all run together like that. You could call him HTC for short. 🙂

He’s so cute! And reminds me of a teddy bear. Maybe Teddy?

I have to vote for Truman, because it’s my alma mater! He looks like such a joy. I just adopted my own puppy in May, and absolutely love her (terror that she is, haha).

Oh….Henry of course!! My husband’s name is Henry and he is the love of my life…except when…..well….never mind. I vote for HENRY!!!!!

Although all three names are perfectly adorable, dogs respond best to monosyllabic names. Perhaps Coop would do 🙂 He is just beautiful. Congratulations 🙂

12 Emily August 13, 2010 at 4:32 pm

I like Truman best.

13 Aponi August 13, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Seems to me that if you both can agree on Truman, the choice is obvious! 😉

I thought he looked like an Oliver. Ollie for short. I voted for Henry only because it was sort of closest to Oliver. (Man’s first name rather than a last). Though I liked the suggestions from Janet a lot with Rowan being my favorite.

What an adorable little heart-breaker! I usually don’t do people names for my animals, so hard for me to choose. Although that’s not quite correct, my newest is Tallulah, which I suppose is a people name. One group got named for restaurants…Galatoire, Tujagues, Boccador and Beauvilliers. There was an Oscar Wildecat. Now have a black/white Persian who is Steinway Baby Grand (BadBoy for short, wonder why?).

Think Truman is a bit hard to say when “calling”. I would lean towards Henry (my grandfather’s name and I can remember my grandmother calling HenRY), but Cooper would work, too. How about Cognac for his lovely color? Plus it’s fun to say.

Pickles!

17 Ursa August 13, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Eep, none of the above! Sorry, I still love and vote for “Satchmo” (I sent you a Tweet saying this when you first ask a couple of days ago). It’s Louis Armstrong’s nickname, after all! 🙂

good luck!
Urs

He’s so adorable!! I just voted; I hope this helps you & Tonia agree on his name 🙂

19 Sarah August 13, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Adorable is what I’d name him!

20 Gabby August 13, 2010 at 10:20 pm

I cast my vote for Truman, but think that you should name him Daschel if he has that much energy. That way you can call him Dasch as a nickname. Congratulations! He is a cutie.

21 Kristin August 14, 2010 at 4:37 am

He’s adorable! I think he looks like a Henry to me.

22 Celeritas August 14, 2010 at 7:53 am

He is soo cute and you mentioning Truman makes me think of that famous Truman so how about calling him:

Capote!

23 Emma in France August 14, 2010 at 11:45 am

What about a Welsh name? Iolo or Ianto? Or how about, wait for it…

Madog 🙂

24 lisa August 14, 2010 at 1:09 pm

I agree with Audrey’s suggestion on the monosyllabic
name for a pet.
How about: Tru?

25 Jan August 14, 2010 at 3:50 pm

What a cutie-pie! Is there anything much better than a puppy? Do think about how it feels to be calling him by his name, especially calling him out loud. I think Truman is fine for him, but he’ll end up with a nickname – he’s just so cute.

26 Chris August 14, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Sure looks like TAFFY to me.
But if it were me, he’d be named Henrytrumancooper for the simple reason that calling that long name will wear thin soon and if some other nickname hasn’t taken its place it would most likely just shorten to Henry. (Sorry, Tonia.)

27 Maggie August 14, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Riley – looks like a Riley 🙂

28 Abigail August 15, 2010 at 1:42 am

Whatever you decide to call him, he’s flippin’ cute!

29 Angeline August 15, 2010 at 6:45 am

Truman, BUT full name to be Truman Henry Cooper or THC because he will surely make you feel good as you walk him through the valley, a great way to get high.

30 Tracy August 15, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Henry gets my vote!

31 Sharlene August 16, 2010 at 4:24 am

Fitz–short for Fitzgerald. He’s adorable!

32 Ella August 16, 2010 at 9:39 am

Aw, he is very cute. My dog is called Luigi, but I think your dog looks like a Henry. We have a dog that stays with us sometimes called Murphy. I am trying to get my Mom to buy me another new puppy soon!
When you start training I have some dog training treat recipes on my site – http://www.crazycrumb-dog-treats.com/dog-training-treats.html
from Ella.

I’m sorry, too, Tonia but Henry is an awesome name for this handsome gentleman. He’s just gorgeous! No puppies in this house until my highly allergic six year old is out and on her own but I can coo over yours. 🙂
